The Meaning Of A Wedding Ring

by Mathieu Courchesne

Marriage is a wonderful thing, perhaps one of the most precious experiences we go through as humans in this life. Wedding preparations, both "before and after" and all the customs and traditions are something you only get to do once in a lifetime. The status of a person "married or single" is often defined by various symbols, below are some.

The symbols defining people status vary by culture; for example in Asia, Indian brides wear a Mangalsootra, Choora, or Sindoor as an indication of marriage status. Among a number of rites, the Indians observe the ring ceremony as the first ritual, here "to be married" couple exchange rings. With the males the differentiation can basically be done by say a" married guy wears a ring on his finger" and stuff like that.

The ring ritual ceremony as used by the Indians is borrowed from the west. Ring ceremony is an old tradition used in Christian ceremonies for ages. The rite has been widely adopted by many cultures around the world and now majority of world religions across the globe practice the ring ceremony as part of their marriage rites. In the case of Christian weddings, ring exchange ceremony is presided over by a minister and done in front of the lord. This is done in order to ask for deity blessings and successful marriage for the newly married.

The wedding ring is usually round in shape; the shape symbolizes the relationship between the husband and wife, that it's eternal with no beginning and end. Like the edges of the rings are connected making it hard for anyone to identify either sides of the ring which is symbolic of the marriage bond, which supposedly binds two people together for life, uniting their thinking and lifestyle. The bride and groom are supposed to blend like colors in water, forming new colors of joy and happiness that last to eternity.

Origin of the wedding ring is traced back to the ancient Pharaonic Egypt in North Africa. The wedding ring is designed to be worn on the third finger of the left hand; reason for this is "it's been asserted that the third finger is connected via a vain directly to the heart, meaning the ring binds the bride and bride's hearts together.

In ancient time, rings were made of sedges and reeds in absence of metal, but with the advent of metal, then jewelers adopted it and this saw the emergence of designer wedding rings. Rings made from gems and precious stones followed and these were often used by the royalty. Modern wedding rings manufacture is a lengthy process, usually involving a lot of research; this is because weddings are important occasions and everyone does their best to ensure theirs stand out.

Wedding rings industry is now a flourishing business, this is due to the popularity that has increased demand for wedding rings. It's very common these days, to find custom designed wedding rings, this is a very recent development, in earlier days, the ring was selected by parents of the bride and groom. In some Asian cultures, the wedding ring is surrounded by elements of superstition.
